The British Land Rover/Range Rover And The Jaguar XJ6
Two of the most comfortable and luxurious cars that you should experience in your lifetime. We've owned both, and we've experienced Lucas the 'Prince of Darkness' with both. When you buy one of these second hand you will save yourself an astronomical fortune by getting a pre purchase inspection completed. Yeah, we understand, you see, you drive it and you gotta have it.
Don't Believe What You Hear
When we purchased the Jaguar, we did it on Ebay. It was relatively cheap, and the owner was very forthcoming with lots of positive information about the Jag but most of it was untrue. We hopped on a plane and flew to Philadelphia to pick up the car at the airport. We handed over the cash and were shown to the car. When we checked out the inside, it was wet. The owner stated that it had just gone through a car wash and the windows had been down. Odd, we thought but we'll run with that and be on our way.
We bid the now previous owner farewell and were back on our way to New Hampshire. The car vibrated at 50 mph, vibrated worse at 60 mph and only got worse the faster we drove, so back to 60 mph and looked forward to getting the tires balanced.
After about an hour the rain started, we've never windshield wipers so slow. The Jag leaked at every window including the windshield and within a short period of time there was about an inch of water on the floor throughout the car. Frankly, our experience with the Jag never improved, we owned it for almost twenty years and drove it a couple of times. The lesson learned at that time was don't buy a car sight unseen.
Next Up The Range Rover Supercharged
The Range Rover Supercharged was quite the car, amazing performance and super comfortable. We checked it out, the paint was immaculate as was the interior, but the windshield was very pitted. We purchased this from a Massachusetts used car dealer, who stated that the car had been owned by Celtics basketball player and he had spared no expense.
We owned this car for a couple of years, the repair bills the first year were equal to half of the purchase price, LOL. This Rover had some interesting glitches. Sometimes, it would trip all possible warning lights on the dash, and go into limp mode, suspension lowered. We quickly learned that the Rover must have been programmed by some of the device makers that invented the 'turn it off then turn it back on' solution, as indeed that is what would be done to the Rover and it would once again be OK for the next 200 miles, or less.
Lesson Learned
Hopefully, reading this will encourage you to get that pre-purchase inspection of the next vehicle that you intend to buy, even if they offer you a warranty. Get it inspected and have everything fixed before you buy it or offer an adjusted price, or walk away.
